I wish I had some tools…
I don’t have any tools. No tool shed to escape to, no workbench to sit at and fidget away an afternoon, no leather belt with hammers and screwdrivers dangling from the sides to wear to the hardware store. No nails, screws, nuts or bolts. No buckets or shovels and picks or axes. Not even a rake. Nothing. Nadda. Zero…
I wish I had a big red Stanley toolbox that I can carry around the house on Saturday mornings. I would carry out it to the yard and spend hours just putzing around building and fixing things. Or, better yet, I could get an axe to chop down trees and a sledgehammer and splitting wedge to chop up the wood. How great would that be instead of fighting for a parking spot at Costco?
Humph…I have tried over the years. I sneak away every once and a while and wander the isles of Home Depot. Sometimes I get caught up in the moment and buy some wood glue or a new hose or a really big bag of peat moss. It doesn’t do the trick though, leaves me feeling a bit lacking really. Once the bag is gone and the hose is connected there’s not much else to do. The wood glue sits unopened for decades.
This year I may just throw caution to the wind and buy a socket wrench set. I was at a friend’s house recently and he has one. Pulled it out like it was nothing and started putting stuff together. Started socketing just like that. It was a one of those big sets, in a metal box, that makes noise when you drop it on the garage floor. Plus, I noticed that socketing is a great excuse to wear work gloves. And I figure work gloves are perfect for wearing to the hardware store, to buy nuts and bolts, and pick up the wood, to build a tool shed in the backyard, with a workbench, and a place to sit and fidget away the afternoon.

I wish I had the strength and dedication to eat healthy and be in shape. Tool belts are not very comfortable, they get heavy, dirty and the hammer constantly rubs and irritates your thigh. You may not realize it, but you already build and fix, and it’s far more important than any gardener, woodworker or handy-man can accomplish.
